Grit is a live tracking and video app used by competitors at off-road motorsport events in North Queensland. This policy explains what the app collects, why, and what it does not do.
Who is responsible
Grit is operated by the Grit team. Questions or requests about data: support@gritracing.com.
What the app collects while you are set up for an event
- Location, speed, bearing, GPS accuracy and altitude of the vehicle the phone is mounted in, with timestamps.
- Device battery and charging state, thermal state, and network quality, to monitor link health.
- Video from the vehicle camera and live audio from the cabin — only for cars fitted with a camera, and only while a crew member has started the camera in the app.
- Diagnostic logs from the app, to investigate faults.
- The IP address your phone connects from when you accept the event terms — recorded once, with that acceptance, as the record that the terms were agreed.
What the app does not collect
No names, contacts, photos, advertising identifiers, installed apps, Wi-Fi networks, or any location outside a running event. A car is identified by its race number and photo only — no crew names are stored anywhere.
Where it goes
Position data is sent to race control so officials can see cars on the course, and a delayed version appears on the public spectator map and leaderboard. For cars carrying a camera, video and cabin audio are streamed live to race control and to a public spectator feed.
When the camera is on, cabin audio is public. The crew can mute it at any time from the app, and only the crew can — no official can mute or unmute it for them.
Live video and cabin audio are streamed, not recorded by Grit. They are transmitted in real time for viewing and are not stored by the app or its server.
Watching the public feed
The public map, video and cabin audio are shown live and unedited.
Motorsport is dangerous. The feed may show incidents, crashes or injury as they happen. Cabin audio is live and unmoderated and may contain strong language. What you see and hear is not chosen or controlled by Grit.
The feed is provided as-is for viewing. Watch at your own discretion. Grit accepts no responsibility for the content of the live feed, and it must not be relied on for any purpose.
Background location
The app reports the vehicle's position while the screen is locked and the app is in the background, because the phone is mounted in a moving race vehicle. This is the core purpose of the app; without it a car disappears from race control's map when the phone locks.
What the app cannot do
The app contains no channel that lets anyone remotely turn on this phone's tracking, camera, or microphone, or change any setting. Data flows one way only: the phone sends; nothing reaches into it.
How long data is kept
- Position and race data are kept indefinitely as part of the event record — they drive the live map, the delayed public leaderboard and results, and the event archives.
- Your acceptance of the event terms, and the IP address it was recorded from, are kept indefinitely as the record that the terms were agreed.
Your choices
Accepting the event terms is required to use the Grit app. Within the app you can stop reporting, mute cabin audio, stop the camera, and remove this phone's setup (“Forget this car”) at any time.
